After a night of rain, Eddie and I hit the road. The road was rolling/hilly but also the surface was pretty rough so in other words, slow. But we were feeling patient so the pedaling was fun. The towns were getting more and more spread out leaving some beautiful countryside in between them. We hit Old Forge, which Frank had told us was a great place to stop for 2nd breakfast. We quickly found Nathan's Bakery behind the Old Forge Hardware store. Well, we didn't make it much farther. The rain and wind began and with a promise of sun for the next few days (and Pirates of the Caribbean in the local theater) we decided to call it a vacation day. We bought a map of New England, watched the movie, and got some good food. The rain and wind has continued so we feel GREAT about our decision to stay and relax. Back on the road tomorrow.
Eddie is funny. He is dealing daily with the fact that I hold the map and "the blind" (me) has the control over where we go. He has to relinquish the power of direction. He expects a lot from me as navigator since I barely know my reft from my light.
With a recommendation from Mr. Stysh to visit Nathan's Bagel shop and Bakery, we headed to Old Forge. We followed the Moose River along a wet but good surfaced road. After about 20 miles it looked like it would just rain all day long and we were thinking of just going as far as we could. Along the back roads I felt something in my glove and then cried out, "OW! Something bit me!" I pulled over and tore off my left glove just as I saw a bee crawl out and fly away. The bite itched but I didn't think much about it until later in day when it had swollen into a meaty paw.
We located Nathan's, which is an amazing bakery. The owner, Alan Nathan is a musician by trade but an amazing baker by early morning. We were going to push onto New Comb but later decided after a string of events to stay and enjoy Old Forge.
