We knew what today would bring - more wind. After a good night's rest, we set off with the sunrise at 6A. Eddie hung back a bit today practicing a cadence that did not irritate his worsening "diaper rash". The wind was incessantly blowing from the south. My only discomfort is my left hand but I just ordered a new handlebar stem to be sent to Eddie's parent's house in Brookings - that should help. The toughest part of the day was the 7 mile stretch heading south right into the wind - physically and mentally tough. Finally we arrived in Huron - Home of the World's Largest Pheasant. We made our way to Memorial Park which offered lots of shade and a (man-made) lake nearby where we took a dip. I took off my shorts at the lakeshore exposing my hideous bike-shorts tan. A young girl pointed at me and cried "Ahh, look at her legs!" Pretty embarrassed, I jumped into the water to find Eddie drowning in laughter.
I want to note that one of my favorite experiences while riding is going near apiaries. We glide through droves of worker bees who are avidly in search of acquiescent flowers to enter. It's nice to be amongst that hum while speeding along on the bike.
In Huron a shaded grove of trees next to the James river became our home for one last humid night before heading to Brookings. My mom out of motherly excitement decided that she would drive out to Huron to pick us up. My dad prevented her from enacting her plan of rescue because he stated that would be like taking a dump and not wiping your ass. That made me realize that my parents understood what we were doing.
